My ongoing love affair with words

stuns me to silence. I capture them

inside my head and hold them hostage.

I let them stew, ferment. I let them age into wisdom

and become more than what they were.

A beautiful metamorphosis that eclipses the natural

and verges on the supernatural.

Then I spit them out, in hopes that their venomous sting

will bring us closer together.

This poem was pulled from my notes app and was accompanied by a bit of journaling which I've included below.

I wrote this because my friend, [redacted], said he likes my big words and how I use them. I thought of the phrase "my ongoing affair with words" and I immediately sat to write this. It took only a few minutes. I did not add any line breaks. I typed it out without entering then went back and made the new lines start where ever they fell in my phone's note app*. In it's purest form this is a stream of consciousness. It started in one place and finished in another. I didn't know what turns it would take and I nearly made it longer. The following line started "I doubt it but." At that point I stopped. The poem had told me it was over and so I listened. I deleted those words because I respect them. Words are truly a gift and I am blessed to have the opportunity to use them; that the universe allowed me to come to this point. I'm a bit high.

*I edited the line breaks in this iteration.
